We welcome two new members to NAHEC! First, I am pleased that
the Louisville Science Center (Louisville, KY) has joined
as a Full Member. Previously, one of their staff members joined
under the Individual Category (which no longer exists). Gail
Becker is the Executive Director and the past President of
ASTC (Association of Science-Technology Centers). Last year,
I visited the Louisville Science Center and saw their exciting
new exhibit "The World Within Us". You can
check it out on their website www.louisvillescience.org.
Amy Lowen, Director of Education, attended our Educators Conference
in Chicago last month, and Lindsey Tucker, Health Science
Coordinator, will join us in South Bend. Next, Im equally
delighted to welcome the National Health Museum (Washington,
DC) as a new Associate Member. Last March, I had an opportunity
to meet with J. Mark Dunham, Acting President, and David Sobelman,
Senior External Affairs Officer, and learned about their ambitious
new project. The National Health Museum is in the process
of raising $133 million for their building and exhibits and
another $100 million for endowment. Their website is www.nationalhealthmuseum.org.
In addition, NHM is leading a new project The National
Health Partnership funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
It brings together leaders in the museum and public health
communities to collaborate on developing and promoting public
health programming within museum and science center settings.
NHM has invited NAHEC to be part of this project. Claudia
Menashe, Project Director, will be attending our South Bend
Conference. NAHEC now has 29 Full and 5 Associate members
in 19 states.
