The National Public Health Partnership (NPHP) was established by the National Health Museum with support from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The NPHP is a nationwide network of museums, science centers, and public health organizations working together to increase public health education in informal learning environments. The Partnership serves the cause of public health by establishing an infrastructure and services that link the content resources of public health organizations with the informal learning expertise of museums and science centers.

Program Initiatives – The Health Response Center

The Health Response Center (HRC), the first programmatic initiative of the NPHP, is a communications initiative designed to provide museum visitors with up-to-date information about important public health issues. Phase One of the HRC project was pilot tested with the topic of influenza (the flu) at two of the nation’s premier health museums — the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science in Houston, TX, and HealthSpace Cleveland, in Cleveland, OH. The HRC was rigorously evaluated and a second use of the HRC technology that focuses on heart health is currently being planned.
The HRC program utilizes two novel outreach tools—an interactive educational touchscreen kiosk and a Web-based Resource Bank for use by museum professionals.
The custom-designed 40” LCD interactive touchscreen kiosks provide museum visitors with information about the flu from such high quality sources as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Visitors can also review flu surveillance in their local community, scan the latest flu news, and learn where in their community they can go for more information. The technology designed for the touchscreen program allows for immediate updates of breaking news and can cover almost any health topic.
The HRC is complemented by a Web-based Resource Bank that provides museum staff with expanded information about the flu, ideas for public programs, educational materials, and links to local flu experts.
